HOW COULD SO MANY CHRISTIANS BE WRONG?
Great question! Here are 3 answers.
GREEK INFLUENCE WAS STRONG
Belief in the immortal soul is nowhere found in Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation. Instead, the complete opposite is taught: man is mortal with the breath of life from God (Genesis 2:7, 3:19,22-23, 6:3,17, Job 34:14-15, Psalms 146:4, Ecclesiastes 3:19, James 4:14, Romans 1:22-23), it is only through Jesus Christ that we put on immortality (Romans 2:7, 2 Timothy 1:10, 1 Corinthians 15:54-55). With Hellenistic schools of thought being so revered by the early church leaders, just as science is today, this Greek theory crept into mainstream Judaism and Christianity. You can read more on this here.
TRADITIONS ARE STRONG
And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God) — then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.” (Mark 7:9-13)
THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME
Some 1500 years after Jesus' earthly ministry, the Church was in need of a major reformation to recognise that God saves us by His Hand, not our own. We've been given 66 books which can be summarised as teaching that man fails and God is our only hope for life, yet we miss it. If a doctrine as major as salvation by Grace could be overlooked, perhaps we have been blind in other areas too. There is one way to find out: the honest hearing of God's Word. Do you have ears? May you hear!
