Is Immortality For Everyone?

The idea of an immortal soul (modern scholars agree) was never once taught in the Old Testament, and we continue to find that neither Jesus, nor the apostles, nor any New Testament scriptures mention it. Instead, Scripture flat-out contradicts this assumption and the teachings it has led to. Here, at 95 Verses, you will be presented with clear Scriptures which proclaim immortality as being inherited by believers only, rather than being universally inherent to all people.

How In The World Did That Happen?

Following Jesus' ascension, the Greek concept of the immortal soul (nowhere found in Scripture) became a popular doctrine of Christianity by external influence. 'Eternal life' could no longer mean 'eternal life' and was reinterpreted as eternal joy or bliss. This belief in the immortal soul was preserved by tradition and a continued, strong Greek influence. Since mainstream Christianity no longer held immortality as a wonderful gift for believers alone, 'perish' could no longer mean 'perish'. Though the deserved judgment for sin throughout Scripture has always been death, including the very sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross, Christians reinterpreted 'death' as eternal suffering. To this day, many clear Scriptures have been misinterpreted and the Gospel compromised.

The Two Views

The Two Views

There are two main views: Exclusive Immortality and Universal Immortality. If Universal, we are immortal souls (in the body) by nature, immortality is possessed by all people and the unbeliever could not literally 'perish', but would have eternal consciousness in 'the lake of fire' (Rev 20:14). If Exclusive, man is mortal flesh (with the breath of life from God) by nature, only the believer in Jesus Christ will inherit immortality, and the rest will suffer for a time in 'the lake of fire' and eventually face 'the second death' (Rev 20:14).

Can We Know For Sure?

We can easily determine which of the two views is biblical, based on the variety of statements we would expect to find throughout Scripture in either case.

Exclusive Immortality

If immortality were ‘Exclusive’, and could only be inherited by faith, we would expect to see verses on:

  1. the immortality of believers only (inherited through new bodies), and

  2. the eventual end or destruction of the unbeliever.

We would also expect to find no verses on the immortality of all mankind or of the unbeliever in proclamations of judgment.

At least 95 verses of God's Word present immortality as a gift granted exclusively to believers in Jesus Christ. Will you hear what God's Word says on eternity?

May God be glorified, His Name exalted and His people blessed (through His Words, by His Son and the Holy Spirit)!
